Zeeland 1772 shilling obv JElsen 112-1807.jpg

This specimen was lot 1836 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 240 (about US$375 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, lot van 3 st.: Holland, dubbele wapenstuiver, 1792; Utrecht, dubbele wapenstuiver 1787 (kabelrand); Zeeland, scheepjesschelling, 1772 (foto). Zeer Fraai (Netherlands, lot of three coins; Holland double stuiver of 1792, Utrecht double stuiver of 1787 and Zeeland ship shilling of 1772. Very Fine.)"

This scheepjesschelling was struck for Zeeland, a province of the Netherlands, 1750-93. It is priced fairly low in the SCWC but is seldom seen at American coin shows, particularly in nice condition. These also occasionally turn up struck in gold.

Recorded mintage: 581,000 for 1772-76.

Specification: 4.95 g, 0.583 fine silver, .093 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Verk. 115,2. KM 90.2.
