Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74915

This specimen was lot 74915 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ZAMBIA. 10 Ngwee, 1978. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67. One of the better examples for the year, this Gem is dripping with luster and brilliance. From the Kings Norton Mint Collection." Zambia seceded from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in October 1964. A set of sterling coinage was issued in 1966. Zambia converted to decimal coinage in 1969 and this type was issued 1968, 1972, 1978, 1982-83 and 1987, whereupon the denomination was suspended. Zambia has not issued any coinage for circulation since a five kwacha of 1992 (KM 31).

Recorded mintage: 1,976,000 plus 24,000 proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel-zinc, 23.6 mm diameter.
