Wurttemberg-Oels 1716-CVL thaler Dav-2878
This specimen was lot 20677 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $3,960. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Wurttemberg-Oels. Taler, 1716-CVL. Karl Friedrich. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Intricately detailed over both sides with smooth, mark-free fields and surfaces to display delicate blushes of complimentary purple and gold tone. A type that appears infrequently in any grade, but can truly be considered RARE as fine as the present. Both PCGS and NGC corroborate this assertion, as this example is the single finest graded among them. The dukes of Württemberg-Oels were a cadet branch of the dukes of Württemberg who set themselves up in Silesia (Oels is northeast of Breslau) in 1647 and ruled there until 1792. From the Linda Collection." The next thaler would not be issued until 1785.
