Worms 1619 goldgulden Fr-3536
This specimen was lot 23672 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Worms. Free Imperial City Goldgulden 1619, AU58 NGC, toned and very attractive. The obverse features a dragon facing left supporting the arms of Worms while the reverse displays the crowned double-headed Imperial Eagle with the abbreviated Latin legend, here spelled out: SUB UMBRA ALARUM TUARUM PROTOGE NOS (Protect us under the shadow of your wings). The strike is well-executed on a flan of good metal without cracks or flaws. An early and very scarce city-issue goldgulden worthy of inclusion in an advanced cabinet." This type is listed for 1616-22 as reasonably available. Worms neighbored Pfalz but was never part of it, being a free city. It was destroyed by the French in 1689 and never recovered its former importance. It was annexed to France 1801-15 but then passed to Hesse-Darmstadt.
