Westphalia 1809-C 2 centimes

formerly in the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck in Cassel 1808-12, as part of a series of decimal coinage that ranged from one centime to 40 franken. At the same time, traditional German denominations such as pfennig, mariengroschen and thalers were issued. Jerome, Napoleon's brother, served him faithfully, stripping his domain of men and money for the Russian campaign. The kingdom collapsed after the battle of Leipzig. At the Congress of Vienna, the area was restored to its former lords, Hannover and Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
