Künker sale 294, lot 3175

This specimen was lot 3175 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NIEDERLANDE, WESTFRIESLAND, Provinz. 2 Dukaten o. J. Spanischer Typ. GOLD. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Netherlands, province of Westfriesland, undated double ducat, Spanish type. Scarce, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This curious type, with the images of the long dead Catholic Kings Ferdinand and Isabella, was issued by several provinces including Westfriesland (shown here), Zeeland (Fr-300), Gelderland (Fr-233), Zwolle (Fr-209), Overijssel (Fr-261) and Kampen (Fr-149). It is not dated but comes from the late sixteenth century, decades after Westfriesland had thrown off any allegiance to the Spanish crown.
