Overijssel (1590-93) 2 ducats Fr-261
This specimen was lot 3240 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Overijssel. 2 Ducat, ND. NGC AU-58. Spanish type using the Ferdinand and Isabella 2 Excelentes design with the titles of Philip II in legend. Slightly wavy flan but with a solid strike and no doubling. Well preserved with only a light brush of handling wear to cheeks and no contact marks to be found. Mild toning with nice original surfaces make for a very handsome piece. Ex: Stack's Sale of the Clifford T. Weihman Collection of Gold Coins of the World. October 18-20, 1951, Lot #468." Overijssel went on to issue many coins as part of the independent Netherlands until the time of Napoleon. We don't know why Ferdinand and Isabella, dead for eighty years, appear on this coin. It is accompanied by a single ducat (Fr-262).
