Wallmoden-Gimborn 1802 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 30852 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Wallmoden-Gimborn. Johann Ludwig 1/2 Taler 1802 MS64 NGC. Highly original surfaces, with lovely gray toning subtle hints of blue iridescence. Very attractive, and one of the nicest and technically finest examples of the type that one could hope to encounter in the market." This tiny county was created for an illegitimate son of George II of England who was also elector of Hannover. This son, born in 1736, was a noted art collector and patron and issued this rare coin before his domain was mediatized.
