The first specimen was lot 22473 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Viennois. Florin, ND. Charles V (1349-64). NGC MS-61. Dauphiné issue, St. John the Baptist standing facing with S.IOHA - NNES.B. around with small castle at end of legend; reverse: Florentine lily with .+KROL - DPhS.V around.... RARE in this state of preservation. Good strike despite some weakness of the central devices. Light attractive tone with luster." The second specimen was lot 752 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €750 (about US$937 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, DAUPHINE, Charles de France, héritier de Jean II (1349-1364), AV florin d'or. Au type florentin. D/ + KAROL- DAPHS· V Fleur de lis. R/ S· IOHA-NNES· B· (tour) Saint Jean-Baptiste deb. de f., ten. une croix et levant la main. presque Superbe. (France, Viennois, Charles of France, heir of John II, 1349-64, gold florin of the Florentine type. Obverse: St. John the Baptist facing, bearing a cross and with one hand raised. about Extremely Fine.)"

The Viennois (also known as Dauphiné) had been ruled by an independent dynasty since the early 1300's. Louis XI's accession ended the province's independence but separate coinage was issued for it until the reign of Charles IX (1560-74).
