Sincona sale 63, lot 1292

This specimen was lot 1292 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$226 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Venice, Alvise Mocenigo IV. 1763-1778. Ducato o. J. Venezia. Münzmeister Lorenzo Bonlini L. B. Gutes sehr schön. Kleines Zainende. (republic of Venice, Alvise Mocenigo IV, 1763-78, undated silver ducat, Venice mint. Good very fine, Minor edge clip.)"

The Duchy of Venice was actually an oligarchy nominally ruled by an elected doge. Venetian independence was terminated by the Napoleonic invasions and the area fell to Austria in 1797. This type was struck 1763-78 without date but the mintmaster's initials can be used to narrow the period of issue. Altho not marked with a value, it had 90 soldi of silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 23.4 g, .826 fine silver, 39-40 mm diameter, this specimen 22.57 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-1561; KM-663, Montenegro 2922.
