Venice (1701-03)-PB ducato Dav-1527
This specimen was lot 833 in Numismatica Varesi Auction 79 (Pavia, Italy, May 2022) where it sold for 480 EUR (about US$607 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted, "VENEZIA - ALVISE II MOCENIGO (1700-1709) Ducato nuovo o Ducatello, sigle P B, BB. (republic of Venice, Alvise Mocenigo II, 1700-09, new ducato or ducatello, initials PB. Very fine.)" This type was struck 1700-09 with various mintmaster's initials. It had a face value of ninety soldi while another series of silver ducats, larger and heavier, were marked "124" for 124 soldi. The small ducati are scarce while the large ducati (which later became ducatone) are very rare. The scudo, larger yet, was 140 soldi or seven lira.
