Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1804

This specimen was lot 1804 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, VENISE, Marino Grimani (1595-1605), AR scudo della croce (7 lire/140 soldi), s.d. (1596-1597). Sigle MV (Mattio Vitturi). D/ Croix ornée, cantonnée de quatre feuilles. R/ Ecu au lion de saint Marc. Très Beau. (Italy, republic of Venice, Marino Grimani, 1595-1605, undated silver scudo of the cross, initials MV. Obverse: ornate cross, cantonned with four leaves; reverse: arms with the lion of St. Mark. Very Fine.)"

The SCWC mentions this type with numerous mintmasters initials. It had a face value of 140 soldi or seven lira. Davenport does not mention any scudi for this doge in the sixteenth century, so we use the number assigned to the seventeenth century issues.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common.

Specification: 31.83 g, .948 fine silver, 42-43 mm diameter, this specimen is 31,47 g.
