Venice (1585-86)-AB scudo Dav-8402
This specimen was lot 1328 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €100 (about US$139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, VENISE, Pasquale Cicogna (1585-1595), AR scudo della croce (7 lire ou 140 soldi), s.d. (1585-1586). Sigle AB (Alvise Baffo). D/ Croix ornée, cantonnée de quatre feuilles. R/ Ecu au lion de saint Marc. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (duchy of Venice, Pasquale Cicogna, 1585-95, undated silver scudo of the cross (seven lire or 140 soldi), mintmaster AB. Obverse: ornate cross cantonned with four leaves; reverse: arms with the lion of St. Mark. Cleaned, very fine.)"
This type, like many Venetian coins, is undated but can be limited to 1585-86 by the term of the moneyer Alvise Baffo. This coin was issued a few years after the battle of Lepanto, the Venetian navy's last act as a major sea power.
