Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1895
Nomisma Aste srl E-Auction 5, lot 103, the same specimen?

The first specimen was lot 1895 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €190 (about US$253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, VENISE, Nicolo da Ponte (1578-1585), AR scudo della croce (7 lire ou 140 soldi), s.d. (1583-1584). Sigle CC (Cristofolo Capello). D/ Croix fleurie avec quatre petites feuilles dans les angles. R/ Ecu au lion de saint Marc. Très Beau. (republic of Venice, Nicolas da Ponte (1578-85), silver scudo of the cross (seven lire or 140 soldi) without date, assayers initials CC. Obverse: floriate cross with four small leaves in the angles; reverse: shield with the lion of St. Mark, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 103 in Nomisma Aste srl E-Auction 5 (Verona, October 2023), where it did not sell. The lot description noted, "VENEZIA Nicolò da Ponte (1578-1585) Scudo della croce - Segnetti al bordo. BB+. (republic of Venice, Nicholas da Ponte, 1578-85, scudo of the cross. Choice very fine.)" This type, like many Venetian coins, is undated but can be limited to 1583-84 by the term of the moneyer Cristofolo Capelio. This coin was issued a few years after the battle of Lepanto, the Venetian navy's last act as a major sea power.

Specification: 31.83 g, 0.948 fine silver, 40-41 mm diameter, the first specimen 31,40 g, the second specimen 31,45 g.
