Venezuela 1929 5 bolivares
This specimen was lot 30712 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 5 Bolivares 1929 MS63 PCGS, Philadelphia mint. Low '9' variety in date. A very attractive coin for the designation, Choice Uncirculated with frosty surfaces and full mint bloom. More elusive than the high '9' variety in high grade, rare and desirable in this select quality, with no examples certified higher by either major third party grading company. A similar piece hammered at $1,800 as lot 25021 in our CICF 2011 Signature auction." This specimen is a later date of a type struck at various mints 1879-1936. It is the last full size silver peso for Venezuela. There are similar quarter, half, one and two bolivares (KM Y20, KM Y21, KM Y22, KM Y23). In spite of, or perhaps because of, the extreme monotony of the design, these are avidly collected by date. Only the 1935 and 1936 issues are reasonably common in high grade. High and low "9" varieties are noted for 1929. This date is from Philadelphia; other mints include Paris and Brussels.
Recorded mintage: 800,000.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 37 mm diameter, designed by Albert Barré of the Paris mint.
