Vaud 1827 5 batzen
The first specimen was lot 3235 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 125 CHF (about US$173 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Waadt/Vaud, Kanton, 5 Batzen 1827, Lausanne. FDC. (Switzerland, canton of Vaud, five batzen of 1827, Lausanne mint. Uncirculated.)"
This specimen was lot 4542 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Waadt/Vaud, Kanton, 5 Batzen 1827, Lausanne. FDC. Herrliche Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Vaud, five batzen of 1827, Lausanne mint. Mint State, Most attractively toned.)"
Formerly a Bernese bailiwick, Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation as an independent canton in 1803, at which time it began to issue coins. This type was struck 1826-31 and is the final issue of this denomination. The last issue of the canton is a batzen of 1834. Forty batzen made a thaler. Two varieties exist for 1827; these specimens (KM 21.2) with the quadrilobe cantonned with leaflets, and KM 21.1, with the quadrilobe without leaflets. This variety was struck only in 1827 but is not given a premium.
