Vaud 1812 40 batzen Dav-362
The first specimen was lot 1709 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,116. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Vaud. 40 Batzen, 1812. NGC MS-61. One year type. Toned." This scarce issue is the only thaler issued by the canton of Vaud. The second specimen was lot 3620 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 450 (about US$593 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"40 Batzen 1812. Gutes vorzüglich. (canton of Vaud, forty batzen of 1812, good extremely fine.)"
Formerly a Bernese bailiwick, Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation as an independent canton in 1803, at which time it began to issue coins.
