Valencia (1396-1410) real
This specimen was lot 529 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €300 (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ESPAGNE, CATALOGNE ET ARAGON, Martin Ier (1396-1410), AR real, Valence. D/ B. cour. de f. dans un polylobe. ARA en fin de légende. R/ Écu losangé et couronné de Valence dans un polylobe. SAR en fin de légende. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of Valencia, Martin I, 1396-1410, silver real, Valencia mint. Obverse: crowned bust facing within a polylobe, "ARA" at the end of the legend; reverse: crowned lozenge-shaped shield of Valencia in a polylobe, "SAR" at the end of the legend. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This real was struck for Martin I, king of Mallorca, who was also king of Aragon, Valencia, Sardinia ("SAR") and Corsica, count of Barcelona and king of Sicily from 1409 (as Martin II). He failed to secure the accession of his illegitimate grandson, Frederic, Count of Luna, and with him the rule of the House of Barcelona came to an end.
