Utrecht 1793 1/2 ducaton
This specimen was lot 78 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$ including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1/2 Dukaton of 1/2 zilveren rijder, UTRECHT Provincie 1581 - 1795, 1793, Silver Type II. Ruiter naar rechts boven gekroond provinciewapentje en titel ...BELG: PRO: TRAI. Kz. jaartal onder het wapen in cartouche. Kabelrand. PCGS MS62. Vrijwel FDC. (Half ducaton or half silver rider of 1793, province of Utrecht, silver type II. Obverse: mounted knight charges right, over the crowned provincial arms; reverse: date in cartouche under the arms, reeded edge. About uncirculated.)"
The specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht 1761-94. Half ducatons are considerably scarcer than full ducatons. Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
