Utrecht SB220-71363r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71363 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. 1/2 Lion Daalder, 1616. PCGS FINE-15 Gold Shield. A circulated example of the type with honest wear, nothing in the way of distracting marks, and light gray toning." Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Utrecht for 1606-50. Other lion half daalders were struck in Utrecht 1636-46 (KM 31), 1644-67 (KM 35.1), 1674-76 (KM 35.2). Most dates are common but choice specimens are rare as striking quality was low. Confusingly, the photo in the SCWC is of a prinsendaalder or rijksdaalder, which has a different design, weight and fineness.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.84 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-12.
