This type was struck in 1960, probably at the United States Mint. The obverse features Jose Artigas, considered the father of independence. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the twentieth century and many issues are rare; this one is common. The 1953 issue is nearly identical in design but is accorded a different KM number. No additional five centésimos were struck prior to the reform of 1975.

Recorded mintage: 72,500,000.

Specification: 4.5 g, nickel-brass, designed by T. H. Paget and Gilroy Roberts.

Catalog reference: KM 39.
