Uruguay 1942 peso rev DSLR.jpg

This type was struck 1942 only, at Santiago, Chile. It commemorates José Artigas, who led the forces of independence against Spain and later against Brazil and Argentina. For his efforts, he was rewarded with ostracism, exile and poverty. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare; this one is common, and represents a reduced weight from the previous peso issue in 1917.

Recorded mintage: 9,000,000.

Specification: 9 g, 0.720 fine silver, 0.2083 troy oz ASW.
