Unterwalden 1727 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4334 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,901 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Obwalden, Kreuzer 1727, Sarnen. Ovales Wappen in Kartusche. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Wertbezeichnung auf der Brust. Rv. Rückseitenumschrift mit V anstelle von U. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Froidevaux, Auktion SINCONA 6, Zürich, Mai 2012, aus Los 2512. (Switzerland, half canton of Obwalden, kreuzer o 1727, Sarnen mint. Obverse: oval arms in cartouche; reverse: crowned double headed eagle with value on breast with "V" instead of "U" in the legend. Extremely rare, Very Fine.)"
Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. Unterwalden was divided into the "half cantons" of Obwalden and Nidwalden. This type was struck 1725-29. One convention thaler was 120 kreuzer.
