United States 2022-D quarter KM-771
The American Women quarters program commenced in 2022 with new designs honoring Maya Angelou, Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Anna May Wong and Nina Otero-Warren, shown here. The James Flanagan bust of Washington was dropped in favor of one done by Laura Gardin Fraser, whose design was originally selected in 1932 for the quarter but was rejected by the secretary of the Treasury. Wikipedia comments, "María Adelina Isabel Emilia 'Nina' Otero-Warren (October 23, 1881 – January 3, 1965) was a woman's suffragist, educator, and politician in the United States. Otero-Warren created a legacy of civil service through her work in education, politics, and public health. She became one of New Mexico's first female government officials when she served as Santa Fe Superintendent of Instruction from 1917 to 1929. Otero-Warren was the first Latina to run for Congress.
