Steve Album sale 51, lot 1298

This specimen was lot 1298 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $3,240. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED STATES: one ounce AV proof coin, 2005-W, American Eagle One Ounce Gold Proof (Bullion Coin), in its original box of issue and COA." In 1986, the mint inaugurated the Bullion Coinage Program in gold and silver to compete with foreign coins (such as the krugerrand) and privately issued medallions. While sales have died down from the initial enthusiasm, they have been steady sellers and the type, issued in one, half, quarter and tenth ounce sizes, is still in production. The proofs are mintmarked "W" for West Point while the bulk issue is not mintmarked. This denomination was also used for the platinum half ounce coins (KM 285, KM 379) in 2005.

Recorded mintage: 356,555 plus 35,246 proofs.

Specifications: 33.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, 32.7 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-219, Fr-B1.
