This specimen was lot 12788 in Stack's Bowers Baltimore sale (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $86.25. The catalog description noted, "2005-P Chief Justice John Marshall Silver Dollar. MS-70 (PCGS)." This commemorative was greatly outsold by the Marine Corps silver dollar also issued in 2005. While we concede that John Marshall, fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was a significant figure in American history, we cannot make out what anniversary is being commemorated.
Recorded mintage: 48,953 plus 141,993 proofs.
Specification: 26.73 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38.1 mm diameter, reeded edge.
