This specimen was lot 2814 in Stack's Bowers August 2020 auction, where it sold for $4,320. The lot description noted, "1881 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC). We are fortunate to be offering multiple high grade survivors of this early date Proof Morgan dollar issue in this sale. This beautiful near-Gem offers bold cameo contrast between frosty design elements and deeply mirrored fields. Pretty iridescent reddish-gold toning engages the upper obverse and lower reverse borders, further enhancing already strong eye appeal. Fully struck, and sure to please." This issue from the Philadelphia mint is common in all grades altho proofs bring a premium. The type was struck 1878-1904 and 1921, with the Philadelphia mint participating every year.

Recorded Mintage: 9,163,000 plus 984 proofs.

Specification: 26.73 g, 0.900 fine silver, .773 troy oz ASW, 38.1 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by George Morgan.
