US 1870-S $1 XF40.jpg

After the manufacture of a few patterns in 1836-39, the Seated Liberty dollar was introduced into circulation in 1840 to immense disinterest. Mintages remained small throughout the series. In 1866, the reverse was modified to add the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". The type was discontinued entirely in 1873. This date's mintage is considered high. The 1870-S is a major rarity with about a dozen known.

Record mintage: 416,000.

Specification: 26.73 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38.1 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 100.
