Sincona sale 97, lot 2382

This specimen was lot 2382 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$2,031 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "USA, 5 Dollars 1870, Philadelphia. Liberty head type. Nur 4'035 Exemplare geprägt. Only 4,035 specimens struck. NGC XF40." This is not a rare 1870 but an 1870-S from San Francisco, which, while a scarce date, is not rare. However, like the 1870, none are known in uncirculated.

Recorded mintage: 17,000.

Specifications: 8.359 g, 0.900 fine gold, .242 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
