United States 1862 dollar
After the manufacture of a few patterns in 1836-39, the Seated Liberty dollar was introduced into circulation in 1840 to immense disinterest. Mintages remained small throughout the series. In 1866, the reverse was modified to add the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". The type was discontinued entirely in 1873. This date is low mintage but is not considered rare. This specimen was lot 2449 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$10,395 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"USA 1 Dollar 1862, Philadelphia. Proof. Seated liberty type. No motto. NGC PF65. Prachtexemplar. Cabinet piece."
Record mintage: 12,090 including proofs.
Specification: 26.73 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38.1 mm diameter, reeded edge, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
