United States 1848 5 dollars
This specimen was part of lot 5971 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €1,500 (about US$1,938 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VEREINIGTE STAATEN VON AMERIKA, 5 Dollars 1848, 1851, 1852, alle Münzstätte Philadelphia. Liberty. Insgesamt 22,56 g Feingold. In US-Plastikholdern der NGC mit den Bewertungen AU 55 (6631516-003), AU 53 (6631516-004) und AU 53 (6631516-005). Fr-138. GOLD. 3 Stück., Winz. Randfehler (2x), sehr schön-vorzüglich. (United States of America, five dollar pieces of 1848, 1851 and 1852, all Philadephia mint, liberty head. Three pieces, two with edge nicks, very fine to extremely fine, graded NGC AU-55, AU-53 and AU-53.)"
The Coronet Head type was produced 1840-1907, with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" added to the reverse in 1866. This issue from Philadelphia is one of a string of common dates from that mint 1843-61. Bullion fled at the outbreak of the Civil War and high mintages did not return until the late 1870's.
