(United States gold ten dollars of 1803, Philadelphia mint, draped bust, large stars. Obverse: head of Liberty right, wearing a cap, date below, thirteen stars around; reverse: an eagle displayed with the American arms on its breast, grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, in its beak a ribbon bearing the motto about E PLURIBUS UNUM. Above, thirteen stars in a cloud. Very rare, fine scratches and a rim nick. Handsome example with mint luster, about Extremely Fine.)"
The first ten dollar gold pieces were struck in 1795; the reverse was modified in 1797 to use the heraldic eagle shown here. Mintages were low, as the mint had little access to bullion, and the output was quickly bought up by speculators and exported, as the coin had more than ten dollars worth of gold. The type, struck until 1804, is rare and expensive today. This example has the large stars reverse. Despite being graded "presque Superbe", it realized the price of a Choice Uncirculated.
Recorded mintage: 15,017.
Specification: 17.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 33 mm diameter, designed by Robert Scot. This specimen 17,47 g.
