Steve Album sale 55, lot 3062

This specimen was lot 3062 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 1,000,000 karbovantsiv, 1996, Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine Series - Bohdan Khmelnytsky, struck at the Moscow mint, Russia with COA of issue, Proof. Commemorating the 400th anniversary of Bohdan Khmelnytsky - the Hetman of Ukraine, outstanding statesman, political and military figure of the 17th century, who made significant contributions to the formation of Ukrainian statehood at one of the most dramatic periods of the liberation war of Ukrainian people in 1648-1654." Wikipedia comments, "The Karbovanets (Ukrainian: карбованець, romanized: karbovanets', plural: карбованці, karbovantsi for 2–4, or карбованців, karbovantsiv for 5 or more), also colloquially known as kupon (купон, plural: купони, kupony) or coupon from the banknote printing, is a former unit of currency in Ukraine in three separate periods of the 20th century. It is also a predecessor currency of today's Ukrainian hryvnia." Bohdan Khmelnytsky (Богдан Хмельницький, c.1595-1657) was hetman of the Zaporozh Cossacks, who financed his successful revolt against Polish rule by the capture and sale of Poles and Jews to the Crimean Tatars. This is an example of the third karbovanets, used 1992-96. It was accompanied by a 200,000 karbovantsiv (KM-9, dated 1995) struck in copper-nickel. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the Karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv).

Recorded mintage: 10,000 at the Moscow Mint.
