Uganda 1981 5000 shillings
This specimen was lot 1314 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €1,280 (about US$1,776 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UGANDA, République (1962-), AV 5000 shillings, 1981. Rare Seulement 100 p. frappées. Fleur de Coin. (republic of Uganda, since 1962, gold 5000 shillings of 1981. Rare, only 100 pieces struck, uncirculated.)"
This NCLT was accompanied by a silver 500 shillings (KM 23). Like many impoverished African countries, Ugandan circulation coinage is scanty. The local elites find paper currency cheaper to produce and easier to manipulate. As of December 2023, US$1 = 3,756 shillings.
Recorded mintage: 100 + 100 proofs.
Specification: 33.93 g, 0.917 fine gold, .993 oz.
