Tuscany SB518-71144r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71144 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Fiorino, 1848. NGC MS-62. Sharply struck and brilliant with light attractive tone." This type is listed for 1843-48 and 1856-58. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. The fiorino, originally a gold coin equal to a ducat, was in the nineteenth century one quarter of a francescone, the Tuscan equivalent of a piastra.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.917 fine silver, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-C72a.
