Tuscany 1748 francescone Dav-1507
This specimen was lot 4544 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Firenze Franz I. 1745-1765. Francescone 1748. Sehr schön. (Italy, Florence, Francis I, 1745-65, francescone of 1748, very fine.)"
This type is listed for 1748-58 and is inexpensive for an Italian crown. Francis was the husband of Maria Theresia of Austria and Holy Roman Emperor. He was originally duke of Lorraine but was evicted by the French and given Tuscany as compensation, the native Medici having gone extinct. Similar crowns (Dav-1504, -1505, -1506, -1508) are listed for 1747-66. In 1800, Tuscany was occupied by the French and not returned to Hapsburg rule until 1815.
