Tuscany 1630 piastra Dav-4200
This specimen was lot 674 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$495 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Toskana. Ferdinando II. de Medici, 1621-1670. Piastra 1630, Firenze. Sehr schön. Geprägt mit abgenutzten Stempeln. (Italy, grand duchy of Tuscany, Ferdinand II of the Medici, 1621-70, piastra of 1630, Florence mint. Very Fine, Struck with worn dies.)"
This type was 1629-30 and 1633. The dies are so worn that we can't be sure the date is 1630. The SCWC has not assigned a KM number, using the Davenport number instead. The prior type, Dav-4199, featured the ducal portrait and the figure of St. John inside rope borders. The duchy was quite impoverished by this period, a result of warfare and economic decline, and her coinage is scanty.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 30.9-32.2 g, silver, 41-44 mm diameter, this specimen 31.95 g.
