Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75809

This specimen was lot 75809 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. Ottoman Empire. Yuzluk, AH 1203 Year 5 (1793/4). Istanbul (Islambul) Mint. Selim III. PCGS AU-55. A wholesome example, this specimen is surpassed by just one other in the PCGS census." Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. The yuzluk was 2½ kurush or 100 para. This type was struck years 1-19.
