Stephen Album sale 47, lot 369

This specimen was lot 369 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Abdul Hamid I, 1774-1789, AR sultani, Islambul, AH1187 year 15, AU, R." Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. This type is catalogued in the SCWC as an altin, not a sultani. The auctioneers catalogued this as KM 419 (rope borders), we think it is KM 420 (dotted borders). It is listed for years 9, 15 and 16. It was probably intended to trade for a ducat.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, gold, this specimen 3.44 g.

Catalog reference: KM-420.
