Sincona sale 31, lot 23

This specimen was lot 23 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$18,993 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMAN TUNIS | Mahmud I (1143-1171/1730-1754ce) sultani 1148ah (1735ce) AU RRRR vf-xf . Only the years 1051 and 1055 have been published for this type. Cf. Damali-TU-A2. According to Stephen Album, this piece is probably unique. Ex Album 23:338." This type was struck AH 1151 and 1155 in the name of Mahmud I in Constantinople. It is very rare in nice condition. Nearly all the surviving Tunisian gold coins have been holed.
