This specimen was lot 245 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$653 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Muhammed al-Habib Bey (1340-1348ah/1922-1929ce) 50 centimes 1928ce/1316ah AR R; w/luster Fdc." This type was struck 1922-28 in the name of Muhammad al-Habib Bey, a French puppet. All of his coinage, with the exception of a nickel bronze ten centimes issued in 1926, is rare. The French left in 1956 and in 1957 a republic was established, ousting the discredited monarchy.
