Tunisia 1928-A 20 francs
This specimen was lot 232 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 4,750 CHF (about US$5,639 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Muhammed al-Habib Bey (1340-1348ah/1922-1929ce) 20 francs 1928ce/1347ah AU RRR -unc. Ex SBV (Frankfurt) 144:2969." This rare date was struck in Paris for Tunisia after World War One to the obsolete standard of the French gold napoleon. The type was struck 1922-28; all dates are very rare. It was struck in the name of Muhammed al-Habib Bey, a French puppet. The French left in 1956 and in 1957 a republic was established, ousting the discredited monarchy.
