Tunisia 1906-A franc
This specimen was lot 215 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$190 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Muhammed al-Hadi Bey (1320-1324ah/1902-1906ce) 1 franc 1906ce/1324ah AR R vf." This rare date was struck in Paris for Tunisia before World War One to the standard of the French silver franc. The type was struck 1903-06; the 1904 is common but this one is very rare. It was struck in the name of Muhammed al-Hadi Bey, a French puppet. The French left in 1956 and in 1957 a republic was established, ousting the discredited monarchy.
