Sincona sale 31, lot 201

This specimen was lot 201 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$6,529 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Ali Bey (1299-1320ah/1882-1902ce) 20 francs 1891ce/1308ah AU RRRR Pf." This type was struck 1891-1900 as part of the decimal reform introduced by the French occupiers. It is the same weight and fineness as a French twenty francs d'or. The type was struck for circulation in 1891-93 and 1897-1900 only.

Recorded mintage: 400,000 plus a few proofs.
