This specimen was lot 748 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Trier. Taler, 1773-GM. Clemens Wenzel von Sachsen (1768-1802). NGC AU-58. Deep old envelope toning with underlying luster. Sharply struck and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." The archbishopric issued numerous thalers in the eighteenth century, only a few such as this one are affordable. The region was annexed by France in 1792 and awarded to Prussia in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna.
