Trier 1769 thaler Dav-2833
This specimen was lot 1648 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €420 (about US$559 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, TREVES, Archevêché, Clemens Wenzel de Saxe (1768-1794), AR Konventionstaler, 1769, Coblence. D/ B. à g., vêtu du manteau d'électeur. R/ Armoiries. Petit coup sur la tranche. Très Beau. Provient de la collection J.-M. Chouters. (Germany, archbishopric of Trier, Clemens Wenzel de Saxe (1768-1794), silver convention thaler of 1769, Coblenz mint. Obverse: bust to left with the mantle of an Elector; reverse: arms. Small rim nick, very fine. From the J. M. Chouters collection.)"
The archbishopric issued numerous thalers in the eighteenth century, only a few such as this one are affordable. The region was annexed by France in 1792 and awarded to Prussia in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna.
