Trier 1757 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 409 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 2,750 CHF (about US$4,191 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Trier, Erzbistum, Johann Philipp von Walderdorff, 1756-1768. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1757, Koblenz. Ausbeute der Vilmarer Gruben. Stempelschneider Franz Anton von Lon. Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Trier, John Philip of Walderdorff, 1756-68, half convention thaler of 1757, Coblenz mint, for the Vilmarer mine. Extremely rare, Good Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1756-57 and 1761 but all dates are rare. The "20" on the reverse may appear to be the denomination but is actually the weight: "20 EINE MARCK FEINSILBER" (convention thalers were ten to the mark). The plate coin in the SCWC shows a different reverse, with the above mentioned legend in a straight line instead of curved and initials "NM". The archdiocese was annexed by France in 1792 and awarded to Prussia in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 13.06 g.
