Trier 1715 1/2 thaler KM-216
This specimen was lot 1393 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$1,088 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Trier, Erzbistum, Sedisvakanz, 1715-1716. 1/2 Taler 1715, Koblenz. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Feine Patina. Kleiner Stempelfehler. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 229, Osnabrück, März 2013, Los 5856. (Germany, archbishopric of Trier, vacant seat, 1715-16, half thaler of 1715, Coblenz mint. Rare, Good Very Fine, Nicely toned, Minor die flaw.)"
Three different half thalers were struck after the death of archbishop Charles Joseph; the other two (KM 214, KM 215) commemorate that event. All are rare. The archdiocese was under French occupation 1673-75, 1684, 1688-89, 1702-04, 1705-14 and 1734-37. Each time, walls and fortifications were demolished. Charles Joseph of Lorraine was bishop of Olmütz 1695-1711, bishop of Osnabrück 1698-1715 and archbishop of Trier 1711-15.
