Künker sale 354, lot 5162

This specimen was lot 5162 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,289 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 2 Dukaten 1764, Karlsburg. Variante ohne Wertangabe auf der Rückseite. GOLD. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (empire of Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, double ducat of 1764, Karlsburg mint, variety without value on the reverse. Scarce in this quality, choice example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Unlike the similar single ducat (KM 610), which was struck continuously 1746-65, only three dates are known for this double ducat, 1754, 1764 and 1765. This example lascks the denomination on the reverse; the subsequent issue (Fr-540) has a "2" at the bottom of the reverse. It is listed in the SCWC under Transylvania, where it was made.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.97 g.

Catalog reference: KM 631, Fr-539; Eypeltauer 348 a.
