Sincona sale 66, lot 2100

This specimen was lot 2100 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$14,482 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SIEGENBURGEN, Fürstentum, Georg Rakoczi II. 1648-1660. Taler 1653 NB, Nagybànya. °GEOR:RAKO D:G:PRIN°T° Geharnischtes Brustbild mit Pelzmütze und geschultertem Zepter nach rechts. Rv. °PAR°REG°HVN°DOM°ET°SIC°COM° 1653° Bekröntes siebenbürgisch-Rakoczi'sche Wappen, im Feld Münzstättezeichen N-B mit je 4 Punkten umgeben. Sehr selten, vor allem in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. Prachtexemplar. (principality of Transylvania, thaler of 1653, Nagybánya mint. Obverse: armored bust with fur cap and scepter in right hand; reverse: crowned arms of Transylvania and Rakoczi divide the mint mark. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Cabinet piece.)"

This thaler was struck 1651-56. This example realized triple the catalog value.
